Hyundai unveiled its latest innovation at the CES, 'Project Elevate', a car that has four legs which can come out and walk, climb or jump and go back in to normal ride when not needed.

The Korean car company calls its 'Project Elevate' concept the first vehicle with moving legs and says it can go at places where ordinary or regular off road vehicles can't. The company developed the concept for use in search-and-rescue operations in rescue operations in cases such as earthquakes, floods and tsunamis.

The car can climb a vertical wall of 5 ft and can jump between a gap. It can walk in two modes – reptilian, in which the legs are, positioned either side of the body and the mammalian, where the legs are pointing towards the front of the body. These modes together can help to reach out faster to people who are in need than an ordinary search and rescue team. Project Elevate also includes four- sided access to ensure aid workers can get bodies in and out of the vehicles quickly and safely.

The vehicle might also make it easier for disabled people to get around. "People living with disabilities worldwide that don't have access to an ADA ramp could hail an autonomous Hyundai Elevate that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in," John Suh, a vice president at Hyundai and head of the company team that helped create the concept, said in a statement, referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The legs can also be folded up and stowed away to enter into a normal driving mode. Power to the joints is cut and an integrated passive suspension system is started to maximize battery efficiency, allowing the vehicle to drive at highway speeds like an ordinary car.

Design manager David Byron said, "By combining the power of robotics with Hyundai's latest electronic technology, Elevate has the ability to take people where no car has been before, and redefine our perception of vehicular freedom"

Project Elevate was presented at the biggest tech trade fair, CES 2019 which took place
from 8 - 11 January 2019.
