Facebook to merge Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
Facebook to merge Whats app, Instagram, Facebook Messenger
World’s most renowned social media site Facebook is going to merge its Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook messenger according to a report by New York Times. As per the report, Facebook says that it will be a long process and it has already started working on it.
The popular photo sharing
app, Instagram has been bought by
Facebook in 2011 for $1billion. While Facebook also bought instant messaging
app, Whatsapp for $19 billion in 2014. Facebook also owns its native messaging
service, Facebook Messenger which has lot of common features of the other
messaging apps, the merger of these three might result in "best messaging
experience" for the billions of users across the globe who use the
Facebook owned apps.
After the merger of the
three, a WhatsApp user can text an Instagram user without switching the apps
and will become interoperatable and this will take place by rewriting a basic
software, New York Times reported.
The rewrite of the basic
software will involve adding End-to-End encryption to all three apps. Whatsapp
has already added end-to -end encryption to its messaging service which
prevents anyone, including Facebook to read its messages. The end-to-end
encryption for the Facebook Messenger limited which has to be enabled
separately, the security feature which is off by default. While the Instagram
doesn't have this feature at all.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg originally
said that both Instagram and Whatsapp will work autonomously from the Social
Network. Thus, the decision of merger is a backtrack on that point of view.
The main concerns with this
merger will be in the case of privacy. One of these is that WhatsApp just
requires user’s phone number for registration. While, Facebook messenger
requires people's real identities. If the whats app messenger starts requiring
that too, a whole lot of its users will leave it and will opt for its
competitors such as Telegram.
Also the WhatsApp founders left
the company over their objections over tightened
centralized control. Even the
founders of the Instagram left for the same reason.
No much details are announced
about the merger, but we will be able see the changes by 2020 but, that too is
not a confirmed thing.
