What is a GPU? How does it work?
A GPU |
GPU is the common name and short
form of Graphics Processing Unit. The name itself gives an idea that, its main
task is to process the graphics, particularly high end graphics in games. It is
a processor meant just for making high end geometric calculations.
The main task of the GPU is to take the
load from the CPU, i.e. Central Processing Unit when running high end graphics
of the games like PUBG.
Let me give you a more practical
example. At home if you have to accomplish 3 different tasks, only mom working
to accomplish all those 3 tasks might take much longer time. So instead,
if two kids in the house performs one - one tasks each and then one of the
kids who finish his first task first will complete the third task. In this way
all the three tasks will be completed in a short span of time and the mother can
do some another important task let’s say cooking.
In this example, CPU is the mom
and the kids are the cores of the GPU which processes the graphics of the game
quickly thus giving time to CPU for doing some other work such as calculation
of game mechanics. This reduces the overall time required. Now we say there
are thousands of cores, so with respect to the processing power, it takes much
lesser time to process high end graphics in the games such as PUBG, and the
result is high quality gaming experience.
After both of these processes have taken place, the
result is transferred into a digital readout, on the desktop or mobile screen
in this case. The processes occur millions of time continuously, resulting in your phone or PC heating
up as you play a game for longer period.
