What is Fps? Slow motion and Timelapse explained!!!

According to Techopedia, "Frames per second (FPS) is a unit that measures display device performance. It consists of the number of complete scans of the display screen that occur each second. This is the number of times the image on the screen is refreshed each second, or the rate at which an imaging device produces unique sequential images called frames."

A video is basically large number of pictures or frames played continuously with minute differences. Frames per second is the speed at which those pictures move in a video at a continuous rate. This makes or eyes feel like the object or the people in the video are moving.

A normal motion video has a frame rate of 30fps which means we are able to see 30 frames or pictures in each second which results in a the objects in the video move without pausing.

Anything more than 30 is used for recording slow motion. But, a normal video also can be shot on 60 fps without changing the speed of the video. 60 fps is also known as smooth motion as it smoothens the video by moving frames at a faster rate. This frame rate is used fir recording video games, sports etc. which has a lot of movement going on in them. Due to the higher frame rate, the video gamers get better overall gamin g experience due to the smoothened video. The sports recording can be slowed down and can be replayed and also maintain clarity of the video.

  • How does Slow motion work?

Slow motion simply means while recording, the camera records video at a higher frame rate, generally 120fps or above which results in more frames per second continuously moving in each second  thus the it takes more time to play the same video. This leads to faster motion of objects seem to be moving slow due to more number of frames.

Higher the number of frames, the slower will be the motion of the object. Slow motion is used for recording videos of fast moving objects which gives great effect fir the movies. If may be a fight scene or a car race, the moving objects  recorded in slow motion or at higher frame rate, appears to be moving at a very slow speed. It increases the overall time required to play a video.

  • How does Timelapse work?

Timelapse is exact opposite of the slow motion video. For a time lapse, a video is recorded at a very lower frame rate mostly 1 frame per second. Objects in a timelapse video seem to be moving at a very higher speed due to camera capturing lesser number of frames.

For example, for a timelapse video, camera captures 1 frame per 2 seconds, it will take 60 seconds for capturing 30 frames. But while played at 30 fps, it will just take 1 second. Timelapse is mostly used to capture moving cars on a street or moving waves of the sea.
