Since its launch in 2005, YouTube has gained huge popularity and has become a place for sharing video content online which attracts over a billion viewers who regularly watch youtube videos. So how does YouTube works?

As you may have noticed, the Google owned website is pretty simple to use and that is the reason for its massive popularity. The videos you upload on YouTube are converted into its Adobe Flash video format with the .Flv file extension. Due to this you can play video using YouTube’s flash player which can be installed on your computer or smart phone for free.

You can even embed youtube video on your website. It can be done by simply copying the html come of the youtube video and pasting it which makes it possible for people visiting your website watch that particular video directly from your website. Without youtube, you have to host that particular video on your website which requires large amount of bandwidth, which is the range of signal frequencies needed to transmit data over the Internet. YouTube carries the bandwidth burden for other sites that want to show their video to the people visiting it.

The YouTube Algorithm

"Working of YouTube Explained"

Generally most of the videos are found by the viewers simply by searching. The youtube algorithm of which you may have heard helps the viewers to get the video which they are looking for which consists of over a million lines of code. When you search a video on YouTube, the algorithm decides whether which videos will be shown to you as a search result and in what order. The ranking of the videos is decided by the 'metadata' which includes the title, description, tags and the thumbnail. So for ranking your videos on youtube, you must make sure that these 4 are relevant toy your content and what viewers would have to search for so they might end up finding it. YouTube also uses the length of time a viewer watches a video. For instance, if a viewer stops watching a video after a few seconds of clicking, the video thumbnail and title is a 'click bait' and this trick is used just to fool people to get quick views. Such videos are so there ranking affects negatively. Whereas, if the video is seen for a longer period of time, means the content of the video is relevant and it gives the viewers what they want. Such video are highly ranked. Other than this, some methods of ranking are not in your hands which company just keeps secret.

Data Centres at which YouTube videos are Stored
According to a fact, every minute 300 hours of video is uploaded on YouTube. So you might wonder where do all these videos uploaded on YouTube stored. The answer is each and every video uploaded on the website is stored at one of the Google's building sized 14 data centre’s which are spread across the world. These huge buildings has thousands of servers in them which are powerful computers that handle billions of Google searches made everyday and also stores your videos. Cooling towers which are of huge size helps to keep the temperature at stable 27 degree Celsius or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. All the 14 data centre’s can communicate with each other to exchange information between them. Whenever you upload a video, it is stored at one of these data centre’s which is near you, but when a viewer plays it, the video is sent to the nearest data centre to the viewer for making it accessible.

Now that you have known the working of YouTube, go watch and upload videos on YouTube. You might not know there may be a creator hiding in you!!!
