Does charging your smartphone battery overnight decreases its lifespan?

Its 2020, and we live in a digital world. From waking up in the morning, until bedtime at night, we come in contact with one gadget that is our very own smartphone. And its Battery is a magical powerhouse of the miracle of microtechnology. So we tend to charge this powerhouse while we sleep at night, expecting to get our very own smartphone fully juiced up in the morning. But does charging your smartphone battery overnight decreases its lifespan? And more such myths debunked

  • Charging Your smartphone overnight decreases its lifespan?

No, charging your smartphone overnight will not damage your battery nor decrease its lifespan. Smartphones are called smartphones because they are 'smart' enough. One of the reasons is that they will stop charging it as soon as it reaches to its maximum capacity i.e.100%. To stop overcharging your smartphone battery, there lies an integrated chip that shuns the supply.

So can you leave your smartphone for overnight charging? The answer is No. Every time your smartphone battery reaches 99%, it is 100 % charged. This will result in increasing the temperatures and will heat up your phone and reduce its lifespan. So it is advisable to stop charging your smartphone overnight.

  • Draining the smartphone battery to 0 before charging it

An another myth about smartphone batteries is that you should completely drain the battery before charging. Nope its not the case with modern smartphone batteries. The older phones had nickel cadmium or nickel metal hydride batteries which would 'forget' their full capacity, if you wouldn't drain them fully before charging. The modern smartphones use lithium-ion batteries which doesn't forget and can retain a working charge across the entire battery.

Even if it is true that lithium-ion batteries get diminished in capacity with each charge cycle, but this effect is not that big. As most of the smartphone batteries even after a couple of years, retain about 70 - 80% of their original charge capacity. This is not a reason to worry about as the smartphone users change their smartphones or batteries on about that same timeframe.

  • Using the Same brand Battery charger

Most of the smartphone manufacturers have advised their users through manuals to always use the official brand charger for charging their device. This is an another form of marketing. They want you to buy the smartphone accessories from them for their profit. This has got nothing to do with the life of your smartphone or its battery.  If the charger provided with the device is not working due to usage over a period of time, any charger from a reputed company is good enough.

  • Installing a battery power saver or background app killing app to save battery.

This is the dumbest myth of all. Battery saving and app killing application do not actually help, but make things more worse. After 2009, the Android became much smarter and can easily manage its resources without installing a third party application. So go and uninstall this so called battery saver apps from your Android smartphone and 'save your battery'.
